Selection Method

Because this site is called Best Criminal Defense Attorneys, this page sets out plainly how listings get here, how they are ordered, and what being listed means. Inclusion is not an award, an endorsement or a ranking of quality.

Coverage

The directory currently covers the United States. Listings are attorneys and law firms whose public business profile places them in the criminal justice or criminal defense category. Other practice areas are not included.

Do businesses pay to be listed?

[DECISION NEEDED: state clearly whether standard listings are free and whether a firm can pay for anything other than a labeled sponsored placement. Draft: No. Standard listings are free and are added from public sources. A firm cannot pay to be included or to change its position in results. Firms can purchase sponsored placements, which are always labeled.]

How sponsored results are labeled

Sponsored placements show the word “Sponsored” on the card and on the profile. They are visually distinct and never mixed into the unlabeled results.

How listings are ordered

[DECISION NEEDED: confirm the default sort. Draft: Within a location or practice area, listings are ordered by completeness of the listing (address, phone, website, hours and description present), then by name. Google ratings do not affect placement.]

Which displayed fields are checked

Name, address, phone, website and practice areas are checked against the source profile at import and again when a correction is requested. See Listing Verification.

How often information is reviewed

[DECISION NEEDED: set a cadence. Draft: Listings are refreshed from source data at least once every twelve months. A listing reported as closed is reviewed within ten business days.]

Do ratings affect placement?

No. Ratings are displayed with their source for information only and play no part in ordering.

Requesting a correction

Anyone can request a correction through the corrections page. The attorney or firm concerned is given priority.

What inclusion does not mean

  • It does not guarantee any legal outcome.
  • A public business profile alone does not prove that a person is licensed, admitted in a given state, or in good standing. Confirm with the relevant state bar.
  • It is not a recommendation to hire a particular attorney.
