The Legal Guides section exists to give plain-language, accurate general information about criminal law in the United States. These are the rules it is written under.
Writing
- Every guide names its writer and the jurisdiction it covers. A guide written for one state is not presented as advice for another.
- Legal statements link to official sources: statutes, court rules, licensing authorities or government publications.
- Guides open with a direct answer, then the supporting explanation.
Review and dates
- The publication date and the most recent substantive review date are shown on every guide.
- A review date is updated only after the content has actually been re-read against current law.
- Where a licensed attorney has reviewed a guide, that reviewer is named.
Independence
Sponsors have no say in what guides are written or what they say. Guides do not recommend specific attorneys.
Corrections
Errors are fixed when found and material corrections are noted on the page. Report one through the corrections page.
